Zhang Wentian, Shen Zemin and other proletarian revolutionaries once studied in Hohai and embarked on the revolutionary path from here. In 1924, it merged with the Engineering Department of Southeast University to establish Hohai University of Technology. In 1927, it was merged into the Civil Engineering Department of the Fourth Sun Yat sen University (later renamed several times, including the Civil Engineering Department of Jiangsu University's School of Engineering, the Water Resources Group of Central University's School of Engineering, the Water Resources Department of Central University, and the Water Resources Department of Nanjing University). In 1952, the Water Resources Department of Nanjing University, along with the Water Resources departments of universities such as Jiaotong University, Tongji University, Zhejiang University, and East China Water Resources College, established East China Water Resources College, with Qian Zhengying as the first dean. In 1960, the school was recognized by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China as a national key university. In 1985, the traditional school name "Hohai University" was restored, and Comrade Deng Xiaoping inscribed the school name.
