South China University was formed by the merger of Central South University of Technology and Hengyang Medical College in March 2000. In October 2002, the Sixth Institute of Nuclear Industry was merged. The predecessor of Central South Institute of Technology was Hengyang Mining and Metallurgical Engineering College founded in 1959, and the predecessor of Hengyang Medical College was Hunan Hengyang Medical College founded in 1958. The school is jointly established by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the National Health Commission, the National Defense Science and Technology Industry Bureau, China National Nuclear Corporation, and the Hunan Provincial People's Government.
